Looking for a rewarding and unusual job? Read on....

My name is Sam Hall and I graduated from IUSD in 1981.  I am a dentist from the Evansville area that works in Alaska.  For the past three years, I have worked in different communities in Alaska.  Actually, communities might not be the right word.  I work in very small villages out in the Bush as one would say up here.  Currently, I have a long term contract in a coastal village on the Bering Sea named Hooper Bay.  I am the only dentist for approximately 3,000 native residents.  For the past three months, I have been accompanied by a former graduate of USI's Dental Assisting program and the IUSD's EFDA program named Tanya Williams.   I have been extremely impressed with her chairside skills and training.  Tanya has enjoyed the experience but has decided with my blessing to return to school and further her career in dentistry.  She wants to go to dental school and become a dentist.  I am happy for her.

Consequently, I am in need of someone to replace her when I return to Hooper Bay after the Christmas holidays.  I need to fly back to Alaska on or around the 3rd of January.  Prior to that, the healthcare organization that is the direct employer of me and my assistant will need to do a background check and verify certain aspects of the candidate's resume.  I am hoping that perhaps one of you might know of someone who might be interested in this unusual job opportunity.

The following is a list of the particular job requirements and a description of what the job entails:
The job is for a CDA with preferable EFDA training although the extra training is not absolutely necessary for the right individual.  The CDA must possess a current radiography certificate from the state of Indiana or any other state and a current BLS certificate that was done with hands on training and not from the internet.  The person selected will be the only person employed besides myself in the dental clinic.  There are some scheduling tasks involved, but there is no dental front office or dental waiting room. Nor is there any billing, collection of monies or other front office duties.  It will only be myself, the employee and one patient at a time in the dental clinic.

The prospective person will be employed by the Yukon Kuskokwim Health Care Corporation and not by me personally.

The facility in which the dental clinic is located in Hooper Bay is a brand new sub-regional medical clinic that just opened this past September.  The dental clinic itself has three operatories each with digital computer integrated P/A radiography and computer station, digital panograph, and the latest sterilization unit etc.

The job entails flying to Alaska and working ten week intervals followed by a return to Indiana for a three week period.  The flights connects in Chicago.  I would be happy for the individual to fly out of Indianapolis instead of Evansville if this is easier for the person. This ten weeks on and three weeks off repeats four cycles a year.  The person would be off the last three weeks of March, June, September and December--give or take a few days.  There is no compensation during the three weeks off or while traveling.

The salary is $17.00 per hour.  Anything over forty hours per week is overtime at time and a half or $ 25.50.  Currently, I am working 55-60 hours a week.  We see one person per hour with root canals and crowns scheduled for either one and a half hours or two hours.  Three days a week, we only do new patient exams and emergency extractions.  The other three days we do everything else.  Based upon forty weeks, working 60 hours per week, this comes to somewhere around $45,000 to $47,000 per year before taxes with twelve weeks off.

Additional features of the job include free roundtrip air fare to and from Alaska, free lodging in brand new housing adjacent to the clinic with full kitchen and washer and dryer, additional $50.00 per day--seven days a week--for food, and a four day weekend trip to Anchorage, if so desired, for R and R--with all expenses paid.  This trip would be somewhere near the half way point of the ten week interval.  No compensation is earned while traveling to and from Anchorage or while there.

The prospective employee can expect, if so desired, to participate in YKHC's employer contribution retirement plan.  There are no other benefits.  The employee will be considered a "contract employee" and not a "full time employee".  Healthcare coverage for the individual only may be available on an individual basis.  Taxes will be withheld each pay period as per normal for most other jobs.

Hooper Bay is a community of approximately 1100 individuals.  Two other villages served by the new sub regional clinic, Scammon Bay and Chevak, host another 1500 to 2000 residents.  No roads connect any of the three villages with each other or to any other community.  During the winter, the three villages are connected by snowmobile trails.  The only way to and from Hooper Bay is by air.  Bethel, Alaska is the "capital" of the Yukon Kuskokwim delta area and the location of YKHC'c corporate headquarters.  The Yukon Kuskokwim delta area is approximately the size of Colorado and  comprises over 57 different villages.  Yupik, one of many native languages in Alaska is the official language of the area but most residents also speak English.

Because of Hooper Bay's isolation and because it is a true seasonal fishing village, the individual selected must be able to adjust to the following:

There are no restaurants, malls, theaters, bars, etc.  The community is a "dry" community which means it is against the law to sell, buy or possess alcohol of any kind.  There is one grocery store which is sufficient in most things.  Food is expensive but with the per diem, it is manageable.

In the winter the nights are long and sunrise is not until 10-11 AM.  During the summer, the opposite occurs and it is light out well into the late evening.  Since Hooper Bay is on the Bering Sea, there is a maritime driven climate with a lot of moisture in the form of rainfall in the summer with temperatures normally in the 50's-60's. In the winter, the area averages 60 or more inches of snow and the temperatures can fall into the -20's to -30's with windchill even lower.  Already in early November, the windchill has been  at times in the -20 range and it has snowed multiple times already.

The individual must be open minded and be able to adapt working in a different cultural climate and not be constantly comparing the ways of the local people to what is normal in Indiana.  The clinic and housing has running hot and cold water and sewage hookup.  The rest of the community does not as is normal with a lot of the communities in the Alaska Bush.

The individual must be self entertained--enjoy reading, walking, and outdoor activities.  There is soon to be satellite TV.  Everything is here for that including a 40" flat screen TV and the satellite dish.  It is just not yet hooked up.

The foremost requirement is that the individual must be willing to work relatively long hours in a friendly manner with people of all ages and personalities.  Dentistry in the Alaska Bush is very different from what one is used to in the lower forty-eight states.  It is not unusual to see children age three with only one or two deciduous teeth left in their mouths.  Children age twelve can easily have all eight first and second permanent molars gone already.  Individuals in their early twenties can already have lost more than half of their teeth.  Individuals, especially women, begin chewing or placing smokeless tobacco in their mouths at an age as young as eight years old.  It is sad obviously, but the personal satisfaction in helping the residents and seeing changes occurring slowly in the manner in which they think and take care of their teeth has been rewarding on a professional level.  Currently, the residents of Hooper Bay treat my assistant and myself as local celebrities.  I am the first dentist that has ever been in their village longer than a week or two at a time.

In closing, I am looking for a unique individual who must be willing to commit for a minimum of one year of employment.  Continued long term employment after that is by mutual agreement and is hopefully anticipated by me--for the right person.  I suggest that the person be single or in a very secure relationship without young children and be healthy and in good physical shape.  There will be no flying home for anything except true family emergencies.  The nature of the true family emergency will be discussed with me first and then ultimately I will determine fairly whether it is or is not a true emergency.  Any unscheduled flight home will be at the expense of the individual as will be any return flight to Alaska.  Any unapproved flight home will be subject for discontinuation of employment.  Employment is at will.  The employee or employer may at their will discontinue the working contract for any reasons just or unjust.  This is typical of most "contracting employment" in Alaska and is stated in my own contract.

Because of my return date, I must act relatively quickly in finding and securing the employment for the right individual.  A resume will be required and YKHC will do a background check on the individual.  As long as the individual has approximately the same credentials as does Tanya, there should not be any problems.  I have already talked to the overall dental director of the YKHC and the recruitment people in HR.  Please feel free to consult Deb Carl, Marabeth Womak, or Phyllis Maddox--all associates of Pam Bastin--of the USI Dental Hygiene and Assisting faculty for personal references concerning myself.  Unfortunately, I have not had the pleasure of getting to know Kim as well as the other individuals.  My wife is a DNP and teaches there at USI while also  practicing in the community of Evansville.  The three above mentioned dental program faculty all know me and my wife personally.  I am a very easy going experienced dentist who nonetheless requires an individual's best effort each and every day.  If you should know of anyone interested after having read this e-mail, please have the individual contact me at this e-mail address or have them phone me at  907-758-4165 or 907-758-4165 anytime after 10:00 PM Evansville time.  Alaska is three hours behind Evansville time and four hours behind the rest of the state of Indiana.  Thank you for your time and any effort you make toward this search.  I know this is a busy time of the year being the end of the semester for those of you that are associated with teaching facilities and for everyone because of the holidays.

Sincerely,
R. Samuel Hall, D.D.S.
